The Big Travel Playlist Secret

The Ultimate Travel Playlist

Building the perfect travel playlist is always a tough one. What if it ends up being played in public and everyone laughs? How do you balance the socially acceptable with what the heart yearns for, eh? It’s a minefield to be sure so I’m asking this question of all you distinguished travellers, what’s on your travel playlist?

I treat music as a tool to get me in the right frame of mind for different tasks. I often plan playlists for photoshoots in advance because music is a huge help when setting the tone for the atmosphere on set and I apply this to travelling too. Thinking about the landscape of the place I’m going to and finding local music help me get ‘in the zone’. And I’m not the only one: Annie Liebowitz brings her own DJ and decks on set and Quentin Tarantino starts a film with the soundtrack then writes the script based on the music!

The Secret Travel Playlist

There’s loads of amazing easy listening folky indie inspiration out there for travel playlists but the secret playlist I rely on when I travel, but NEVER share, is called, Happy Day. Happy Day is where I throw any song that is making me happy right now, for however long it does! It often contains songs I’m going to hate within a few weeks and swap out and put together, they make no sense at all. The songs can be from any genre or year, as long as they make me smile – which is often exactly what I need after a 24 hour delay, a night on a public bus, a last minute cancellation etc. Sometimes I just need to get back to that happy place to enjoy the trip again, regardless of a setback or seven, and the Happy Day playlist helps with that!

Below is what’s currently on mine. As you can see, if you were worried about what could end up on your Happy Day playlist, just think of this one and you should be comforted. I am definitely listening to more embarrassing songs than you are, and updating them regularly! Thank you, France, for having the word, ‘éclectique‘ to explain away any and all musical tastes! I plead eclectic.
